आज इंदिरा कांग्रेस भवन बिलासपुर में बिलासपुर जिला कांग्रेस कमेटी द्वारा स्व खूबचंद बघेल जी की जन्म जयंती पर कांग्रेस जन द्वारा उनके छायाचित्र पर माल्यार्पण कर विनम्र श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित कर उनको याद किया गया उक्त कार्यक्रम में कार्यक्रम के संयोजक सैयद जफर अली हरीश तिवारी साकेश मिश्रा विनोद साहू गौरव एरी ने संयुक्त रुप से बताया कि डॉ खूबचंद बघेल छत्तीसगढ़ के एक महान स्वतंत्रता सेनानी, दूरदर्शी राजनेता, प्रसिद्ध चिकित्सक, और छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य निर्माण के प्रथम स्वप्नदृष्टा थे,
नागपुर में चिकित्सा की पढ़ाई के दौरान वे राष्ट्रीय आंदोलनों से जुड़ गए। महात्मा गांधी से प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने सरकारी नौकरी छोड़ दी और असहयोग आंदोलन, नमक सत्याग्रह और भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन में सक्रिय रूप से भाग लिया, जिसके लिए उन्हें कई बार जेल भी जाना पड़ा.
स्वतंत्रता के बाद, 1951 में वे धरसिवा क्षेत्र से विधायक चुने गए और 1967 में राज्यसभा के लिए चुने गए.
उन्हें अलग छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य के शुरुआती समर्थकों में प्रमुख माना जाता है। उन्होंने छत्तीसगढ़ी अस्मिता को जगाने के लिए 1956 में ‘छत्तीसगढ़ महासभा’ और 1967 में ‘छत्तीसगढ़ भ्रातृसंघ’ का गठन किया.
एक बेहतरीन लेखक और नाटककार भी थे, जिन्होंने समाज सुधार और छत्तीसगढ़ी भाषा के विकास में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया .
वे उनकी प्रमुख साहित्यिक कृतियों में ‘करमछड़हा’ (सामाजिक नाटक) और ‘बेटे का बेटा’ शामिल हैं। उनके योगदान को चिरस्थायी बनाने के लिए, छत्तीसगढ़ सरकार द्वारा कृषि के क्षेत्र में उत्कृष्ट कार्य और अनुसंधान को प्रोत्साहित करने हेतु ‘डॉ. खूबचंद बघेल सम्मान’ की स्थापना की गई है!
